The year 2026 opened with a bang in the AI space.

ByteDance's Jianying team launched "Seedance 2.0," a next-generation AI video generation model boasting cinematic multi-shot capability, native audio-visual sync, and physics-level character consistency. Its impact on the global market rivals DeepSeek's debut a year ago, once again demonstrating the growing strength of Chinese AI technology on the world stage.

Looking back at January's AI app market, the signals were already there: downloads of image and video generation apps climbed sharply, with Kling AI, vivago.ai, and Dreamina AI all breaking into the top download rankings. Demand for AI-generated visual content is approaching another inflection point, with commercial potential increasingly being unlocked.

So which products stood out in January? Below, we dive into the trends shaping the global AI app market at the start of 2026.

I. Image & Video AI Dominates the Global Market

In January, creative tool AI performed strongly across global markets. Image and video generation apps accounted for 30% of download rankings and an even more commanding 36% of revenue — far outpacing other categories in monetization efficiency. Notably, video generation's revenue share (18%) exceeded its download share (14%) by 4 percentage points, reflecting users' growing willingness to pay for dynamic content.

Education apps, by contrast, showed a classic "high traffic, low monetization" pattern: a 15% download share translated to only 13% of revenue. Chat and AI assistant apps held 13% and 10% of downloads respectively but similarly underperformed commercially. Emotional companion apps, while accounting for just 7% of downloads, drove 9% of revenue — a notably higher conversion rate.

Overall, creative content generation (image and video), education, and emotional companionship are the most promising market segments right now.

Chinese-developed image and video apps in particular stood out in January, emerging as a rising force in the global market. Kling AI (by Kuaishou) climbed 13 spots to rank 5th globally in AI app downloads; vivago.ai rose 21 spots to 9th; and Dreamina AI (by ByteDance) surged 60 spots to 10th, making a striking debut on the global stage.

II. Chat & AI Assistants Lead in User Retention

In January's global monthly active user (MAU) rankings, chatbots and smart assistants dominated. ChatGPT retained the top spot with 930 million MAU. DeepSeek's growth slowed, with MAU declining 1.4% month-over-month to 120 million. Meanwhile, Gemini and Grok posted gains of 8.88% and 7.90% respectively, reaching 100 million and 78.48 million MAU. Among creative AI apps, AI Mirror led with 38.93 million MAU, up 5.29% month-over-month.

In terms of MAU growth rate, creative and entertainment apps saw a surge in demand. AI photo and face-swap app Sosiee topped the chart with 269.13% month-over-month growth, followed by Instant Portrait and Kling AI at 155.1% and 144.1% respectively. Niche tools such as AI music apps Shoom and Rythmix, and text-to-speech app Speechify, also posted steady gains.

This suggests that while top-tier apps battle for market share, smaller developers are finding opportunities through focused vertical innovation. However, these fast-growing newcomers still face the challenge of scaling from millions to hundreds of millions of users — a hurdle yet to be proven.

Among Chinese apps going global, top MAU rankings remained relatively stable, though new challengers are gaining momentum. DeepSeek and Cici held the top two positions with 120 million and 53.26 million MAU respectively, despite slight month-over-month declines. PixVerse and seekee also performed well, growing 2.23% and 4.26% respectively. KlingAI was the standout, with MAU surging 144.18% to enter the top 7 among Chinese global apps. On the other hand, PictureThis (AI plant identification) and Question.AI (AI education) saw MAU drop by 4.16% and 15.17% respectively.
